The phone box...

Every now and then London takes a random object and asks local designers, artists, charities, celebrities, random people you've never heard of.... to decorate them. We've had cows, pigs, elephants and gorillas over the years. At Easter, having got bored of animals, it was the turn of the egg! If you'd wondered around London town with those eager eyes of yours, then you might have been lucky enough to spot Humpty Dumpty perched on a ledge or Jack's goose's golden egg.

Way back in 1936, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed the classic British red phone box to commemorate King George V's silver jubilee. In the build up to the Olympics, Childline teamed up with BT (British Telecome) to celebrate not only 25 years of Childline but also the Queen's golden jubilee and dotted some rather glammed up phone boxes around London.

The Clash! It doesn't get much more English than this!

This was taken in Covent Garden, where you can pick up the best French macaroons from Laduree - try the salted caramel! There is a tiny little cafe upstairs where you can sit in and drink tea and eat cake, whilst people watching from the balcony. I hear the original Paris store is much better but I'm yet to discover it.

If you happen to be in Covent Garden and find yourself gasping for some refreshment which tea won't quite quench and you just can't choose between an alcoholic tipple or a chocolate milkshake, fear not! Pop yourself into Dirty Martini's for a chocolate cocktail. Which comes served with a chocolate straw! Mmm mmm mmm!

Back to our phone boxes... Did you know Sir Giles Scott also designed Waterloo Bridge? (I love random facts). The arches are exactly the same shape as on the top of the phone box. Speaking of Waterloo Bridge, there is also a really lovely old post war, black and white film starring Vivian Leigh. Here is the youtube video which pretty much tells you the entire film's plot! It's a rainy afternoon, duvet on couch kind of film.

More phone boxes you ask? Ok here you are...

Look you can just about see the real Big Ben in the back ground! Actually the tower is officially called the Clock Tower, it's the bell inside that's called Big Ben - I told you, I love the facts.

This one was my favourite. I imagine it's like being in a rainbow inside.

Apologies for the quality of photographs and slight obsession with instagram. The phone boxes should be displayed for a little while longer and there are many more than I've captured here. If you're really keen you could even bid for one and have your very own rainbow box in the garden.
